Virginia (Sweat) Lewis

Mrs. Virginia Sweat Lewis, 93, of Blackshear, passed away Tuesday evening, April 23, 2024, at Baptist Village Nursing Home in Waycross.

Born in Blackshear, Georgia on April 12, 1931, she grew up in Pierce County in the area known as “The Forks of the Hurricane”.  After attending Blackshear High School, Virginia married Vernon Lewis, Jr. who had just returned home from serving in WWII.  Together they had two children and moved to Jesup, GA where they made their home for many years. While in Jesup, Virginia worked in the bookkeeping department at American National Bank for twenty years.  After retirement, she dedicated her time to being a housewife.  Her favorite hobbies were gardening and cooking.  Friends and family always praised her food, especially her cakes.  The fact that she took so much pride in her cooking may be the reason people enjoyed whatever she made.  Virginia was a member of Beulah Baptist Church during her youth and would return to Beulah Baptist when she moved back to Pierce County twenty years ago. 

She was a daughter of the late Archie Rudolph & Betty Lee Sweat.  In addition to her late husband, Offie Vernon Lewis, Jr., she was also preceded in death by her son, Bobby Joe Lewis; and two sisters, Evelyn Smith, and Iris Jean Mixon.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Rozier (husband, Harold) of Blackshear; a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Lewis of Pearson; her granddaughter, Virginia Tison (husband Trey); a great granddaughter, Claire Tison; two sisters, Carolyn Huggins of Alma (Pierce County) and Sandra Kay Crews (husband, Lawton) of Waycross; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Graveside services for Mrs. Lewis will be held Friday afternoon, April 26, 2024, at 4:30 from the Beulah Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the cemetery from 4:00 until 4:30 pm.
